O'Neil, who was in her high-school year at the time of the auditions, auditioned in the 3rd season of Canadian Idol in the beginning of 2005. Her vocal performance impressed the judges, and so she was promoted to an audition in the 100th place. The performance of O'Neil was highly appreciated by judges. However, O'Neil suffered a significant drop during the Top 10 and Top 9 final weeks when she was voted for in the bottom 3, bottom 3, and bottom 2. They were stunned by the decision and proclaimed to the public they believed that Melissa was the most talented contestant. O'Neil was never in the top 3 after numerous outstanding performances. Judge Werner was confident, following two more stunning performances that O'Neil was going to be the winner in her Canadian Idol competition, as being the first female and the youngest contestant in history in the wake of the September 7 Finals of 2005. O'Neil was immediately contacted from Canadian premier Paul Martin to congratulate her on her win at Canadian Idol.
